The incident which occurred around 7:00a.m. led to traffic gridlock on Ekoro Road as motorists had harrowing experience navigating through the crowd that thronged the scene of the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the woman allegedly kidnapped three children who were on their way to school in the area, but that a bread seller raised the alarm as the suspect tried to escape from the scene.
The unknown woman was said to have been beaten to a pulp before youths in the area hung a tyre on her neck, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.
At the time P.M.NEWS got to the scene, the woman had burnt completely.
Policemen from the Oke-Odo Police Station watched helplessly as the woman had already been burnt before they got to the scene.
Hundreds of residents formed a ring round the burnt woman as they watched and discussed the fate that befell her.
A policeman, who craved anonymity, told P.M.NEWS that no arrest could be made because no one knew who set the woman ablaze.
A man who simply identified himself as Ikisa said the three children were going to Army Children School in the area when the suspected kidnapper accosted them and pretended she was taking them to the school.
He said as she tried to run, a mob caught her, beat her thoroughly before setting her ablaze.
“Somebody challenged her on the ownership of the children. She claimed the children belonged to her, they asked questions and discovered that the children were not hers. They beat her and set her ablaze,” an onlooker, who gave his name as Mauton Avose told P.M NEWS.
Other sources said the woman came with a jeep which she parked at a distance. The jeep was later taken to the Oke-Odo Police Station, while others said she wanted to take the children into a tricycle before she was caught, beaten and set ablaze.
The police could not confirm whether the woman came with a jeep or whether the jeep had been taken to the station or not as the Divisional Police Officer of Oke-Odo Police said he was at a meeting when P.M.NEWS called to confirm the veracity of the claim.
Passers-by said they were happy about the jungle justice meted out to the woman, saying that if she had been taken to the Police Station, policemen would have set her free.
